In This Issue: A Warm Welcome
by Olivier Urbain

Welcome to our first issue of TAP-Q, the quarterly magazine of the Transcend: Art and Peace Network. We hope you will enjoy the illustrations and articles, distribute this issue freely to your friends and send us some feedback, including articles for our next issue.

The mission of the TAP Network is to "support creativity and the arts in working for peace." Why is there so much violence in our world? Conflicts are not the problem, they are part of life. Our challenge is to develop ways to handle conflicts with creativity, non-violence and empathy.

When we think about it, the role of art in this endeavour is absolutely phenomenal. Think about the potential, offered by literature, cinema, fine arts, performing arts - indeed all forms of arts - to stimulate our creativity, express non-violent options and understand countless individuals and groups at a deep level.

The 20th century was a century of war and violence; let us make the 21st century a century of art and peace. According to Gandhi, we must be the change we wish to see in the world. It is up to us!

Introduction
by Theresa Wolfwood

When Olivier asked me to be Chief Editor, I replied that "Chief" was too big a word for what I am doing for TAP-Q. Because Canadian English is my first language and I have some professional experience as an editor and as a writer, I agreed to help. I am really only a copy editor - correcting errors in grammar etc. without changing the flavour or intent of any articles! We hope that this will stimulate TAP members and readers to contribute more reflections, actions and information for the next issue. So please, pass it on. Here goes with our first TAP-Q!
